Sperm Collection & Processing
Sperm collection and preparation are crucial steps in fertility treatments like IUI, IVF, and sperm banking, ensuring the highest quality sperm for fertilization.
Collection is done in a controlled, sterile environment to maintain sample health, while processing techniques enhance sperm motility and select the most viable and healthy sperm.
This careful approach maximizes the chances of successful conception and supports a smoother path to parenthood.
Sperm Processing
1. Sperm Collection
Sperm can be collected through various methods depending on individual needs:
- Masturbation:The most common, non-invasive method done in a private clinic room.
- Home Collection:Some clinics allow collection at home using a sterile kit, delivered within a set time.
- Surgical Retrieval:Techniques like TESA or Micro-TESE are used for men with blockages or ejaculation issues.
- Post-Ejaculatory Urine Collection:For men with retrograde ejaculation, sperm can be retrieved from urine.
2. Sample Preparation & Processing
The sperm sample is cleaned and processed to keep only the most active, healthy sperm. Techniques include:
- Sperm Washing:Separates healthy sperm from seminal plasma and prostaglandins.
- Density Gradient Centrifugation:Selects the most motile and healthy sperm.
- Swim-Up Method:Allows the strongest sperm to swim into a nutrient medium for selection.
- Cryopreservation (Optional):Sperm can be frozen for future use at -196°C.
3. Quality Assessment
After processing, the sperm sample is assessed for:
- Motility: The percentage of moving sperm.
- Concentration: The number of sperm per milliliter.
- Morphology: The shape and structure of the sperm.
- Viability: The percentage of live sperm in the sample.
4. Utilization
The prepared sperm can then be used in:
- IUI (Intrauterine Insemination)– placing sperm directly in the uterus.
- IVF (In Vitro Fertilization)– fertilizing eggs in the lab.
- ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection)– directly inserting a single sperm into an egg for fertilization.
- Sperm Freezing– long-term storage for future family planning.
